Bread Street

Our Bread Street salon prides itself on being in the middle of the action – close to the Usher Hall, the Filmhouse Cinema, the Grassmarket and the ECA, as well as an eclectic selection of bookshops, boutiques and hipster cafes.

The crack team of  stylists at Medusa Salon in Bread Street have won an embarrassing number of national and international accolades and regularly participate in top development programmes with companies like Wella and Sebastian (a combination which sounds suspiciously like a Glaswegian band from the late '90s). But in all honesty, we do know our hairs from our helbows.

We also have an entire studio space in the basement that is available for hire from £20+VAT per hour. It's a flexible space - perfect for dance and exercise classes, seminars, beauty courses, photo shoots, group meetings, and pretty much anything else apart from re-enacting medieval battlefields. The mirrored studio has its own reception area, refreshments station and washroom facilities, equipped with an audio system, stage and projector screen. Contact Rhonda on 0131 622 7277 or e-mail [email protected]

Parking: There are a few parking bays immediately outside shop, as well as a couple of big car parks in Riego Street and Castle Terrace.

Other: WiFi, wines, beers, barista coffees and teas, smiles.

Meet the Bread Street Team

Colin

Colin is the CEO of medusa salons, and cuts hair at Bread Street for his regular clients. However, the bulk of his time is now spent in education, helping to develop skills and confidence in stylists in medusa, as well as via numerous industry training programmes, and also for charity (Colin is a Wella Brand Ambassador for Unicef).

Although an experienced educator, Colin is continually on the lookout for new ways to develop further, seeking new sources of inspiration and refining and honing his skills, and this commitment to the craft is reflected in the string of awards he’s received over the years (most recently as a finalist in the prestigious 2016 British Hairdressing Awards).

“The more I cut hair, and the more I teach, the more I realise that striving for perfection in the fundamentals, is what most helps to creates timeless, beautiful hairstyles, as well as the basis for award-winning creations. All too often, I’ve seen emerging stylists try to do too much, too soon - with results that last as long as the walk to the salon exit. That doesn’t happen at medusa”.

Over the years, Colin has acquired a reputation for repeatedly supporting losing football teams. Nonetheless, his commitment to the Hibbies remains undaunted, and we hope that one day his football team will spark a smile to beam across his face, as opposed to the weekly ritual of self-flagellation, repeatedly slapping his palm onto his forehead each time another rare opportunity at goal is missed.

AMA (ask me anything)

Q: What’s your favourite cocktail ?

A: Don’t be silly, I’m from Niddrie.

Q: Song that last made you cry ?

A: I love Andrea Bocelli’s Time to Say Goodbye - it makes me tear up ….BUT IT HAS TO BE THE PROCLAIMERS SUNSHINE ON LEITH WHEN HIBS WON THE SCOTTISH CUP

…Ya big softie !!!

Q: Best meal you’ve ever cooked ?

A: I love making sushi …but do a mean cheese and toast

Q: Tell us your biggest weakness

A: I find it hard to say no, so end up taking on more than I should!!!!!

Q: Proudest moment ?

A: It's going to sound like a cliché but it has to be seeing our team progress and achieving their own goals and creating something worthwhile for themselves.

Jo

Jo is one of our most experienced stylists having worked in hairdressing for almost twenty years. Recognising the depth of expertise that she has built up as well as her tremendous commitment to education, she is a trainer and assessor for our trainees, but she also works in the Bread Street salon tending the tresses of her many loyal clients.

“I love all aspects of my job, there is the creative side, the personal and emotional side, the technical side – there is a real sense of responsibility, the client’s hair is in our hands, and we’ve got to create the best possible style for the client every single time. No excuses.”

When she’s not working, Jo is the most fantastic mum and looks after her two boys (well, three boys, if also you count her husband).

“I want my clients to feel special and not taken for granted and make sure we are always on the same page. To me, that’s the crucial step from which everything else is built on.”

Q: When my boss offers to buy me a drink for answering all these questions, I shall tell him…

A: Gin & Tonic, and keep them coming!

Marnie

Marnie is one of the smiliest people around, and that’s possibly because she found a profession where she’s allowed to talk as part of her job….which only goes to prove that the school teachers who continually told her to be quiet didn’t realise she was actually just putting in some early training for her chosen career.

But Marnie also has a calm side, where she can focus entirely on the job in hand without so much as a squeak.

Marnie loves the variety of styles that her clients ask her for, and also works closely with the other stylists on tweaking and evolving different styles to keep them fresh, but undoubtedly her all-time favourite is cutting a bob.

“There’s something pure about the simplicity of the bob, but there’s so many variants in the style that allow you to subtly show your inner cool.”
